Established by the Amy Ferguson Institute (now called the Echo Vocal Arts Alliance (EVAA), the earnings from this Fund provide the bi-annual June Lythgoe Music Scholarship to a recipient residing in the West Kootenay region to further their musical studies at a post-secondary institution, masterclass or a course of study at a summer music school.
The Angelo Mastrobuono Bursary provides support to an L.V. Rogers student pursuing post-secondary education. Consideration will based upon financial need rather than academic standing.
The Bragagnolo Bursary Fund provides an annual award to a graduating student from L.V. Rogers or Mt. Sentinel who attended Blewett Elementary school for a minimum of one school year excluding Kindergarten. Applications are accepted by L.V. Rogers and Mt. Sentinel.
The Brian McGrath Memorial Bursary Fund provides an annual award to a graduate from DESK and L.V. Rogers. Recipients will be positive character reflecting humility, determination and honesty pursuing higher education or a specific area of interest. Consideration is given to both the scholastic achievement and the financial need of applicant. Applications are made through and awarded by School District 8.
The Caitlynd Piderman Scholarship Fund provides an annual award to an L.V. Rogers or DESK student who is trying to overcome health challenges, or a student that shows superior determination, effort and commitment to sport. Grant applications are accepted through L.V. Rogers.
Caitlynd Piderman was a 2006 L.V. Rogers graduate who loved basketball. This Scholarship was established in her memory.
Donations to this Fund will be donated to a local charitable organization by the winner of the Community Fund of North Kootenay Lake Society’s annual Treasure Hunt. That charity (or charities) will be selected from a list of local charitable organizations.

Established the Nelson & District Credit Union, this Fund generates income for the ‘NDCU Aspire Bursary’ which supports a local KSA student requiring financial assistance.
Maia Vezina, born January 23, 1994, was born in Dawson City, Yukon. At age 5 her family moved to Nelson, BC, where Maia thrived in school and in the arts. Maia is a graduate of L V Rogers Secondary School, class of 2012. She attended the University of Calgary, graduating in 2018 with a double major in English and Education.
In 2013 Maia suffered injuries to all four limbs due to a crash with a drunk driver. Three months later she returned to university in a wheelchair to continue her studies, managing one course that year. A five year program became a six year program and a very happy graduate walked the carpet to accept her two diplomas.
Maia had a dream to work with gifted children and develop a curriculum based on emotional intelligence. She lived her first dream upon graduation, becoming a teacher for a mixed aged class of gifted young children at the Eaton Arrowsmith private school in Vancouver.
Maia tragically passed away on May 26, 2023, at the age of 29.
Maia’s family is proud to establish this Award in support of future local educators.
The Nathan Jackman Memorial Fund was established by his parents, Tammy and Derrick Jackman to honour the life of their son, Nathan Jackman. Donations to the Fund will be endowed in perpetuity and the generated income will provide annual scholarships to graduating students in Nelson and Castlegar.

The Nelson & District Hospice Society has been providing compassionate emotional, spiritual and practical support for anyone navigating serious illness or experiencing grief for over 35 years.
The Society is a grassroots organization whose volunteers companion those in our community who are interested in finding ways to live fully during a serious illness or bereavement. Volunteers receive extensive training on building trusting, respectful and nurturing relationships with our clients, enabling them to respond to individuals’ specific emotional, spiritual and practical needs.
Donations to this fund generate earnings to support programs and projects of the Nelson Police Foundation.
In 2013, the Nelson Police Board approved the formation of the Nelson Police Foundation the goal of which is to raise funds that will be used for important community and policing initiatives supporting a healthy and productive relationship between the Nelson Police Department and the community it serves. Specialized training and equipment, community education, crime prevention and youth projects that are not typically funded with the annual police budget are financed through the fundraising efforts of the Foundation.
The Fund also generates income for the Nelson Police Foundation Bursary. This bursary is awarded annually to an LVR student with financial need that has an interest in criminal justice or law enforcement.

In the 1930’s, Slim Porter was an inspiring coach of Nelson’s Fairview Athletic Club. He was known to give generously of his time and money to help kids participate in sports. Porter ensured everyone was able to play sports, regardless of financial standing: if a child couldn’t afford equipment, he’d find some. These ‘kids’ – now all grown up – established the Slim Porter Memorial Fund in his honour. They welcome further donations to the fund. The income generated from the Fund will carry on Slim’s legacy.
The Ted Hargreaves Fund provides assistance to youth athletes to allow them to participate in sports.
Norman Edward Hargreaves (November 4, 1943 – November 3, 2005) was an amateur and professional hockey player, coach and teacher. He played for the bronze-medal winning Canadian men’s hockey team at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France.
Hargreaves played his minor hockey in Foam Lake, Saskatchewan, where he suited up for the senior Foam Lake Flyers. He also played junior hockey for the Melville Millionaires, and professionally for the Winnipeg Jets of the WHA. He finished his career in Nelson, British Columbia, where he played and coached the Nelson Maple Leafs of the Western International Hockey League. He taught high school and was instrumental in developing hockey programs in Nelson.
The Ted Hargreaves Fund was established to continue the legacy of community involvement through sport that epitomized Ted’s 35 years in Nelson. Through integrity and commitment, Ted made a difference in the lives of countless youth and adults in our community, both as an educator and coach.
The Aimee Beaulieu Transition House provides emergency safe shelter and support for self identifying women and children leaving domestic violence and abuse.
